The basics
Deities or gods are often thought as forces of nature, creatures much larger and powerful than mere mortals, beyond our wildest dreams, unreachable. This, of course, is far from the truth. At least in part. It is important to aknowledge that gods can be all of those things. But, most of the time, they are closer than people usually think. Divinity is not an unreachable goal, and gods are not always born from belief and nature. There is, in fact, a much larger portion of gods that were born mortals. Almost every kind of mortal has, at least, one of their own ascend to this state(1), giving divinity a wide variety of abilities and cultural backgrounds.
This initial life as mortals is not the only thing that changes the kind of god a mortal can become. Their abilities and passions as mortals influence the kind of god they become, but the nature of their change also influences them in big measure. We can talk about warrior gods as an example. As much as their side, motives and predisposition to violence makes them warriors, there's the change itself. A warrior god born from winning all their battles and gaining the blessing of divinity from this is not the same as a warrior god born from fire and loss. They both influence battles and give their blessings to their followers, but the kind of abilities and adventages are completly opposite. The first one might give their followers strength and bloodlust, while the second one might give them determination and refuge. This are not only personal limitations, but the nature of their powers. As a god that was born for flowers can't unroot them without going weak, and a god that was born for the sun can't hide in shadows without dissapearing for real.
